Jaundice in a 40-year-old female: a systematic approach

Morning report session presenting obstructive jaundice with case-based differential diagnosis and investigation algorithm.

A 40-year-old female presented with progressive jaundice, pale stools, dark urine, and weight loss over 6 weeks. The session covered:

• Classification of jaundice: pre-hepatic, hepatic, post-hepatic
• Key history and examination findings in this case
• Investigation approach: LFTs, viral markers, ultrasound, MRCP, CA 19-9
• Differential diagnosis: gallstones, cholangiocarcinoma, pancreatic head carcinoma, primary biliary cholangitis
• Multidisciplinary team approach to management
• Palliative vs. curative intent treatment decisions

The session emphasised the importance of early referral to hepatobiliary surgery in cases of suspected malignant biliary obstruction.
